Tiler costs

Comparing tiling prices? Consider laying labour, tiles, the substrate, pattern and finish. A labour-only price per m² is not a complete bathroom price.

Start with the substrate

Tiles are the visible finish. Flatness, stability and the selected system determine how the work can proceed. In renovations, adhesive residues, height differences and moisture exposure are assessed first.

Tile size and laying pattern

Large-format tiles, corners, niches and patterns require different preparation and more cutting. Include tile size, joint width and pattern in the quote.

A bathroom needs more than tiles

In wet areas, waterproofing is part of the system. Corners, penetrations, drains and movement joints must work together. The tile price alone does not describe this work.

Ordering materials

Record the net area and expected cutting allowance before ordering. Keep spare tiles from the same batch for possible future repairs.

Tile size, laying pattern and cutting

A simple rectangular floor differs from a room with recesses, many corners or a pattern. Include tile size, joint width, orientation and edges in the layout. Discuss cutting waste and who orders extra tiles. Compare labour and materials separately when supplying your own tiles.

Identify substrate work and junctions in advance

Agree who removes old tiles and prepares the substrate. In wet rooms, waterproofing and junctions belong in the same plan; floor heights and existing doors can also matter. Specify levelling, profiles, grout and sealant. A tiling-only price is not the price of a complete bathroom renovation.

Frequently asked questions

When is an hourly tiling quote easier to compare than a price per square metre?

A square-metre price is useful only when surface condition, tile size and laying pattern are comparable. For repairs, small areas or detailed work, an hours estimate may be clearer. Agree the expected amount of work and how additions will be handled.

Are levelling and waterproofing included in tiling?

They may be separate items. Have the preparation and waterproofing needs of the chosen floor or wall system assessed. Also check whether adhesive, grout, sealant and waste removal are included.

Do large tiles and herringbone patterns affect the price?

Yes. Tile size and pattern affect handling, setting out and cutting. Send the desired size and pattern together with photographs and room dimensions, so quotes cover the same installation.

Is the price on this page a quote?

No. An estimate or worked example is for initial planning. The property, materials and agreed scope determine your quote.
