Finding a tiler

Finding a tiler starts with the type of work: a straightforward floor, a bathroom, large-format tiles or a detailed pattern can require different preparation and experience.

Ask about comparable work

Discuss examples relevant to the actual materials and layout. Ask how the substrate, corners, transitions and wet areas will be prepared. A low labour price alone does not show whether the proposal covers the required system.

Compare written specifications

Use the same tile choice, measured area and finish when requesting quotes. Include removal, repairs, adhesive, grout, trims and cleaning. Establish who orders the material and allows for cutting waste.

Plan around the room

Access, furniture, other trades and drying times affect the schedule. A bathroom also needs coordination of drainage, waterproofing and fittings before tiling begins.

Agree responsibilities

Record the work, exclusions, payment stages and procedure for additional work. Check the finished layout, joints and junctions together. Keep product details and spare tiles for possible future repairs.
