Costs and included work
For painting a staircase, compare the scope first: substrate, preparation, coating system and number of coats. A price is useful only when supply and finishing work are clearly defined.
| Work / price basis | Starting indication | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Painting a staircase | Price on request | Substrate, preparation, coating system and number of coats |
What affects your total?
Treads, risers, handrails, turns and access require a different budget from a flat wall surface. Rot or crack repairs, masking, access and colour changes affect preparation. A square-metre rate for a flat wall does not automatically apply to window frames, stairs or exterior work.
What to send with your request
Send surface area, photos of the substrate, interior or exterior location and desired finish. Include your postcode, preferred schedule and the elements that must remain, so the scope can be assessed.
Specify the surfaces
Decide which parts will be painted and which retained. Include the landing and adjoining trim where a consistent appearance is required.
Prepare for durability
Cleaning, removal of failing coatings and suitable preparation affect adhesion. Ask the decorator to specify products appropriate to the material and expected foot traffic.
Plan access and curing
Agree how the staircase will remain accessible and follow the coating's drying and curing instructions. A surface that feels dry may not yet be ready for normal wear.
