Paintable area is not floor area

Measure the walls and ceilings that will actually be finished. A room's floor area does not establish the number of square metres to paint.

Spraying or rolling

Spraying can be efficient in empty, well-protected spaces. In an occupied home or with several colours, masking becomes more significant. Discuss the desired appearance and site conditions before choosing a method.

Preparation prevents repeat work

New plaster must be suitable and sufficiently dry. Existing paint, stains, cracks and damage are assessed before finishing. Record the number of coats and the chosen paint.

Compare a complete quote

Specify repairs, primer, paint, labour, protection and cleaning up. Ask what you need to move yourself and when the room can be used again.

Rolling or spraying: compare masking and preparation too

The method must suit the room and existing finishes. Preparation in an empty property differs from work around furniture, flooring and a kitchen. Specify protection, masking, coats, product and colour. A low square-metre rate may allow for less preparation than a complete proposal.

Which surface will be painted?

New plaster, an old paint layer and a damaged wall each need assessment. Mention stains, cracks, loose layers or damp marks. Ask which repairs are included and what needs further investigation. Distinguish painting from plaster repairs and work to correct the cause of a defect.

Frequently asked questions

Are wall painting costs based on floor area or wall area?

Wall painting is based on the wall area to be painted. Measure each wall’s length and height and agree how windows, doors and small sections are counted. A room with 30 square metres of floor space does not automatically have 30 square metres of painting work.

Is spraying always cheaper than rolling?

No. Spraying can be efficient in an empty room, but masking and protection are needed. In an occupied home or on small areas, preparation may determine the cost difference. Compare the same paint system and standard of finish.

Are repairs, primer and extra coats included?

Only if they are included in the agreed scope. Specify filling, crack repairs, primer, number of coats and colour. An absorbent surface or a substantial colour change can require extra preparation.

Is the price on this page a quote?

No. An estimate or worked example is for initial planning. The property, materials and agreed scope determine your quote.
