Painting a door

Door-painting costs depend on the door material, condition and detailing. Frames, both faces and hardware should be identified in the scope.

Assess the surface

Old coatings, damage and panel details affect preparation. Exterior and interior doors may require different systems and repair work.

Agree the practical arrangements

State whether doors are removed, where painting takes place and who handles locks, hinges and other fittings. Protect adjoining floors and frames as required.

Check the finished scope

Compare preparation, materials, application and refitting. Follow the product's curing guidance before normal use, and confirm whether associated frames and trim are included.

Frequently asked questions

Does every door need all its old paint removed?

No. First assess which layers are sound and compatible with the new paint system. Loose coatings and defects need attention, but completely stripping every door is not always necessary.

Are both sides and the door frame included?

Specify this explicitly. Door faces, edges, panels, glazing beads and the surrounding frame may need different work. Also agree who removes and refits hardware.

When can a painted door be closed again?

Follow the selected product’s drying and curing instructions. Touch-dry does not necessarily mean fully cured. Agree how the door can be used meanwhile without damaging fresh paint.
