Installing a roof window

Installing a roof window involves the opening, supporting roof structure and weatherproof junctions. The product size should follow an assessment of the room and roof.

Costs and included work

For installing a roof window, compare the scope first: supporting structure, shell, roof shape and connection to the existing house. A price is useful only when supply and finishing work are clearly defined.

What affects your total?

Replacing a window in an existing opening differs from creating a new opening with structural trimming and interior lining. Existing foundations and walls, crane setup, stairs, services and finishes can be substantial separate items. A shell and a ready-to-use room are different scopes.

What to send with your request

Send current and proposed layouts, roof dimensions, facade photos and available structural information. Include your postcode, preferred schedule and the elements that must remain, so the scope can be assessed.

Plan position and use

Consider daylight, opening operation, furniture and external access for maintenance. A suitable position must also work with the existing roof construction.

Assess structure and permissions

The installer should determine whether supports need alteration and how insulation and weatherproofing will connect. Check applicable rules for the address and proposed appearance change.

Include internal finishing

Compare the window, flashing system, access, roof repairs and internal lining. Agree decoration, blinds or controls separately where relevant and check operation at handover.
