Levelling a garden

Levelling a garden aims to create a usable surface while preserving appropriate drainage. A perfectly flat-looking garden is not automatically the right outcome for every site.

Costs and included work

For levelling a garden, compare the scope first: survey, groundworks, landscaping materials and waste removal. A price is useful only when supply and finishing work are clearly defined.

What affects your total?

Access, ground conditions, level differences and existing planting can make a flat rate per square metre misleading. Discuss specialist landscaping with a gardener; it is not automatically part of a building contract.

What to send with your request

Send garden dimensions, changes in level, desired layout and access width. Include your postcode, preferred schedule and the elements that must remain, so the scope can be assessed.

Measure before moving soil

Assess existing slopes, thresholds, boundaries and drainage routes. Include neighbouring levels so the proposed work does not create a new water problem.

Match preparation to use

A lawn, planted border, patio and garden building have different requirements. Agree the intended finish before deciding how much excavation, fill and consolidation are needed.

Plan access and materials

Restricted access can affect equipment choice and labour. Specify the removal or reuse of soil and the quantity and type of imported material in the quotation.

Coordinate the final levels

Check connections to paths, doors and terraces. A landscaping specialist should advise on drainage and surface preparation appropriate to the planned use.
