Building a patio

Building a patio involves its foundations, drainage and connection to the house as well as the visible paving. Decide how the space will be used before choosing the final material.

Costs and included work

For building a patio, compare the scope first: survey, groundworks, landscaping materials and waste removal. A price is useful only when supply and finishing work are clearly defined.

What affects your total?

Access, ground conditions, level differences and existing planting can make a flat rate per square metre misleading. Discuss specialist landscaping with a gardener; it is not automatically part of a building contract.

What to send with your request

Send garden dimensions, changes in level, desired layout and access width. Include your postcode, preferred schedule and the elements that must remain, so the scope can be assessed.

Plan size and layout

Allow for furniture, walking routes, doors and garden access. Consider sun, shade and how the patio meets planting and existing paths.

Prepare the ground

The required excavation and base depend on the soil, paving system and expected loads. Have levels and drainage designed to avoid directing water towards the building.

Compare materials and details

Stone, concrete and other finishes differ in appearance and maintenance. Discuss edging, joints, slip conditions and replacement of individual pieces as part of the specification.

Request a complete quote

Include removal, ground preparation, materials, laying, drainage and waste handling. Confirm thresholds and any interfaces with an extension before work begins.
