Structural calculations

Structural calculations help establish whether a proposed alteration can safely carry its loads. Their scope depends on the building and the change being considered.

Costs and included work

For structural calculations, compare the scope first: defined scope, safe preparation, dismantling and waste removal. A price is useful only when supply and finishing work are clearly defined.

What affects your total?

The calculation covers only the structural elements named in the brief; surveys, drawings, permit fees and construction are separate items. Structural function, services, unidentified materials, floor level and waste routes determine the approach. Structural calculations, temporary support, reinstatement and any surveys are specified separately.

What to send with your request

Send photos, measurements, floor level, access and the elements that must remain. Include your postcode, preferred schedule and the elements that must remain, so the scope can be assessed.

When calculations may be needed

Examples include removing a supporting wall, adding a roof extension, changing roof use or altering foundations. A qualified engineer should define what requires investigation for the specific project.

What affects the fee?

Complexity, available drawings, inspections and the number of design options influence the work. Ask whether drawings, revisions, foundation assessment and responses to authority questions are included.

Information to prepare

Collect plans, measurements, photographs and a clear description of the desired change. Identify previous alterations and known defects so that the engineer can assess missing information early.

From design to construction

Engineering, permit checks and contractor pricing should use the same design revision. Changes on site should be referred back for assessment rather than treated as an automatic substitution.
