Removing floor tiles

Removing floor tiles is a preparation job for a new floor. The tile layer, adhesive and screed may need different treatment, particularly where underfloor heating is present.

Identify the floor build-up

Establish what must be retained beneath the tiles. Drawings, inspection and the condition of the floor help determine the removal method; the visible tile size alone is not enough.

Protect heating and services

Tell the contractor about underfloor heating and concealed pipes. Agree how the system will be assessed before and after work, and what happens if hidden damage or an unsuitable base is found.

Price the full preparation

Compare removal, waste handling, adhesive removal and levelling as separate items. Access, adhesion, thickness and the required finish influence the scope and may outweigh small differences in floor area.

Prepare for installation

The exposed base should be assessed for strength, flatness and moisture before new flooring is fitted. Agree thresholds and finished floor levels with the next trade to avoid an incomplete handover.
