Removing carpets and floor coverings

Removing carpets and floor coverings should leave a base suitable for the next finish. The fixing method, adhesive and underlying floor affect the work required.

Identify the layers

Distinguish loose-laid covering from bonded carpet, vinyl or other finishes. Include underlay, adhesive residues and any trim in the scope. Unknown older materials should be assessed before disturbance.

Protect the retained floor

The method should suit the base and its intended reuse. A timber floor that will remain visible requires different care from a surface being prepared for a new screed or tiled finish.

Stairs and occupied rooms

Discuss edges, nosings, access and protection of adjoining areas. Plan furniture movement and waste handling before work begins. A clear route helps limit disruption during removal.

Compare complete prices

Ask whether the quote includes adhesive removal, disposal, repairs and preparation for the next covering. Removing the visible material alone does not establish that the floor is ready for a new finish.
