Lawn maintenance costs

Lawn-maintenance costs depend on the grass area, condition and tasks included. Routine mowing is different from renovating a worn or poorly draining lawn.

Costs and included work

For lawn maintenance costs, compare the scope first: survey, groundworks, landscaping materials and waste removal. A price is useful only when supply and finishing work are clearly defined.

What affects your total?

Mowing, scarifying, fertilising and restoration are different tasks; lawn condition and access define the job. Access, ground conditions, level differences and existing planting can make a flat rate per square metre misleading. Discuss specialist landscaping with a gardener; it is not automatically part of a building contract.

What to send with your request

Send garden dimensions, changes in level, desired layout and access width. Include your postcode, preferred schedule and the elements that must remain, so the scope can be assessed.

Assess the lawn

Describe bare patches, shade, weeds, drainage and how the area is used. A gardener can distinguish maintenance needs from underlying soil or site problems.

Specify the service

Mowing, edging, feeding, aeration and repairs should be listed separately where relevant. Agree the frequency and seasonal timing rather than expecting every task at each visit.

Compare complete prices

Check equipment, access and disposal of clippings or removed material. For a lawn affected by building work, discuss soil reinstatement and repairs separately from ongoing care.
